"Philippine Society of Sleep Medicine celebrated World Sleep Day 2016 with Uratex". Why We Need A Good Sleep Everyday.

Last March 18, 2016, The Philippine Society of Sleep Medicine (PSSM), the primary organization that aims to promote sleep medicine healthcare in the Philippines, again led in the celebration of World Sleep Day 2016 held at Lung Center of the Philippines, Quezon City.

The World Sleep Day 2016 slogan is "Good Sleep is a Reachable Dream"and this year, Multiflex RNC Philippines, Inc. , makers of Uratex foam and mattress products, lent its wholehearted support to the PSSM in its efforts to help promote good  healthful and restful sleep.

During the celebration of World Sleep Day 2016, the PSSM held its 10th annual symposium entitled "Sleep Matters: Discovering the Importance of Sleep" on March 17-19, 2016 at the EMG Auditorium of the Lung Center of the Philippines. There were various workshops and lectures on many sleep related concerns for adults---and even in the children-- that elicited interests from symposium guests.

The PSSM is just one of the many orgnazitaions around the world that advocates the importance and educates people about the value of good sleep, which many people lack or perhaps do not pay attention to due to today's fast-paced lifestyle and blinding-speed technology. Various studies have already shoen that lack of restful sleep becausr of irregular work and lifestyle may lead to health problems in the future. Or even having an incorrect mattress may harm the body rather than provide the restful sleep it needs after a long and hard day at work.

The PSSM reiterates, THE IMPORTANT ELEMENTS OF GOOD SLEEP:

1. Duration or the sufficiency of sleep to become well rested and alert the following day.
2. Continuity which means sleep time should be continuous and unbroken;
3. Depth that sleep should be deep enough to be restorative or invigorating,
4. Quality sleep, which is very crucial to one's good health and quality of life.

It is said that good quality and invigorating sleep is important for people's day-to-day functioning, even in children for their overall wellness and development.

The PSSM cited the 10 Commandments of Sleep Hygiene in accordance with the World Association of Sleep Medicine or WASM:

1. Fixed bedtime and waking up time
2. No daytime sleeping in excess of 45 minutes
3. Avoiding excessive alcohol intake 4 hours before bedtime or smoking
4. Avoiding intake of caffeine such as coffee, tea, most sodas, including chocolate 6 hours before bedtime
5. Avoiding heavy, spicy or sweets 4 hours before bedtime, but a light snack is acceptable.
6. Exercising regularly but not before bedtime
7. Using comfortable bedding
8. Finding comfortable temperature when sleeping inside a well-ventilated room
9. Blocking out distracting noise and less light as possible
10. Limiting the use of the bed to just sleeping.

For its part, Uratex supports the PSSM through its own advocacirs in promoting good sleep in the Philippines.

"Uratex has always been humbly supporting efforts to promote good sleep, a much-needed bodily activity that unfortunately many people do not pay attention to or perhaps, do not know how to achieve it because of various reasons. Simply put, it all boils down to adapting to a more healthy and less-stressed lifestyle, a positive mindset toward life, and choosing the correct mattress depending on the body's shape and contours and this is where Uratex can help," explains Dindo Medins, Corporate Sales Director of Multiflex RNC Philippines.

As the country's sleep specialist, Medina said Uratex will continue to help Filipinod achieve healthy and superior sleep by continuously developing and bringing innovative mattresses and other sleep solutions.

The PSSM is a group composed of several specialists involved in the practice of sleep medicinr in the country and are highly trained to address sleep disorders among Filipinos. Pulmonologists, Neurologists, Ear, Nose and Throat specialists, Psychiatrists and Pediatricians are among those that comprise the group and have expressed interest in the process and study of sleep.

Here in the Philippines, the practice of sleep medicine is still relatively young compared to other countries so it is no surprise that even other doctors do not know that such practice exists here. But the practice is indeeed, growing, even in Association of Southeast Asian Nation (ASEAN) member countries. In fact, the Philippines will serve as host of the 4th ASEAN Sleep Medicinr Congress in 2017 where it will share vital knowledge with other countries about sleep, Together, this collaborative meeting will also help determine how the different cultures of these countries can impact on their actions with regard to sleep concerns.

For more information about the value of good sleep to one's health, visit the PSSM website, thepssmi.org. To find out more abput the Uratex mattress and other sleep solutions, call the Uratex Consumer Hotline, 888-6800 or visit www.uratex.com.ph

Novuhair Ambassador Abby Asistio with Mark Zuckerberg

It was January 31, 2016, when our fellow Filipino Abby Asistio flew to San Francisco and had the most wonderful opportunity of being chosen as one of the 18 invited by Facebook on their 12th Anniversary Friends Day celebration with California-based Alopecia awareness advocate, Rachel Regal.

Alopecia is an autoimmune condition which results in partial or total head and body hair loss.  Abby Asistio have had it since she was four while Rachel just developed it sometime in 2012, the same year she discovered that her 10-year-old daughter, Eliana, had it, too.  Six inspiring stories were picked by Facebook among its 1.64 billion users and Abby’s friends were all amazed when they’ve found out that Abby’s Alopecia story was one of them.  Imagine that!

Abby and Rachel met each other through the double A hand sign campaign that Abby started in 2012, and They've been "connected" since then.  Last year, Facebook Stories featured how these two were able to build a friendship, as well as campaign for disease awareness through Facebook!  And last February 1st, Abby and Rachel had the chance to tour Facebook headquarters in Menlo Park, San Francisco, meet and chat with the people behind Facebook (Founder & CEO Mark Zuckerberg, COO Sheryl Sandberg, CPO Chris Cox, and a whole lot of awesome people), get crazy cool gadgets and have one of the best experiences of their lives.

Abby recounted that it was such a surreal feeling to be in the same room as the creator of Facebook, Mark Zuckerberg. Mark Z was wearing his trademark look (jeans, sneakers, shirt and a big smile on his face), and had such a friendly, approachable aura and demeanor about him.  Not at all intimidating!  He shared stories about how the company started, its mission-vision, the ups and downs that come along, and their future plans.  Those invited also had the chance to ask him questions. When Mark Z was asked about achieving success and life’s “impossibilities”.  He said, “There’s a difference between impossible and things taking a really long time. Even if you’re not going to be able to do something in a short time period, if you care about something, you want to see the world to move into that direction… So the best thing to do is just get started and not be discouraged.  It’s tough because this stuff is hard, or else people would’ve already done it.”

Miss Asistio got the chance to ask a question to one of the world’s 50 most powerful, successful women in business, Facebook COO Sheryl Sandberg.  Aside from Alopecia awareness, Abby is also an active Real Beauty advocate with girls and women struggling with various insecurities, being so consumed by the world’s unrealistic and sometimes superficial standards of beauty. So Abby asked Sheryl about her perception of it. Sheryl said that beauty is just like success and that no one could really define it for you.  We are all unique.  We have different stories, dreams and desires. We should explore our own inner and outer beauty, believe and embrace that we are beautiful, and never allow anyone to tell us otherwise.

Mark capped off his talk by sharing their company philosophy with everyone present. Though already having over 1 billion subscribers, there are still 7 billion people all over the world without access to all the meaningful connections and information that Facebook brings. One thing that the company stands by is that “things are always 1% completed”. It keeps them grounded, reminding them that there is always so much work, growth and progress to be done, and so many people to reach out to and help.
Everything about the Facebook trip was overwhelming and inspiring according to Abby.  More than anything, it reminded her about “responsibility”.  We are all given our own platforms, in this case “accounts and connections”, to make a dent in this world. It is up to us to become complacent and take these vehicles for granted, or maximize the opportunities and use them to make a positive impact in this generation. Abby is grateful that Facebook has become a medium for her to communicate disease awareness and touch people beyond the confines of her tiny room and her country. Abby is also glad that she and Rachel are two out of millions of people choosing to recognize the importance of social media in contributing to making this world a better place, and actually doing something about it.

Truly, God plans the best adventures and creates the most beautiful surprises.  Abby knows that she wouldn't have been handpicked for this if it weren't for Him, as well as the countless individuals who have cared and showed support for my advocacy.Abby would like to leave a positive thought to everyone that we should really take the time to search for and identify our “purpose” – that one unique, very specific calling that is the result of our talents, dreams, desires, passions and experiences.  Once you find it, be faithful to it no matter how long or difficult the journey towards its fulfillment may be. You’ll never know where it could lead to, how far it could go and how large it could grow. Abby is also thankful that her campaign continues to spread and reach new heights and she is particularly grateful to Facebook for giving her this opportunity and to Novuhair,Nature's Answer to Hair Loss (www.novuhair.com), for always being so supportive of her advocacy and endeavors.

Abby is proud and honored to have represented the Philippines and the Alopecia community in this once-in-a-lifetime, international event

Peta Theater Experience

Press Release: PETA Summer Program: Theater workshops for all ages

QUEZON CITY, Philippines --  The Philippine Educational Theater Association (PETA), one of the Philippines' pioneer theater groups known for its original productions and community workshops, opens its annual Summer Program this coming April 4, 2016.

The PETA Summer Program is an annual series of workshops formulated for children, teens, and adults programmed by PETA during the summer season. What sets this Summer Program from previous years is the additional special courses that open up new growth opportunities for aspiring theater performers and artists. Aside from the regular courses offered by PETA,  the theater company mounts two special courses for visual artists and for senior citizens looking for a refreshing theater experience.

The PETA Summer Program will be available at PETA's home theater in Quezon City and a satellite venue for aspiring enrollees in the South to be announced by the start of February.

A wide variety of courses

Opening a total of 8 courses, PETA starts off their workshops with the Children's Theater workshops. The Children's Theater workshops will be made available to kids from ages 6 to 8, and 9 to 12. The workshops will give the kids a chance to open up their creativity and imagination to create stories which they will be performing at the end of the workshops.

The Teen Theater workshops are tailored for ages 13 to 16 wherein they will get to learn the different disciplines of theater from writing, visual arts, dance, and music. The Teen Theater workshops present an environment wherein teens can express and relate experiences with the other enrollees.
For young professionals and working adults, PETA offers Theater Arts for beginners, Basic Acting for experienced performers, and Creative Musical Theater for the musically-inclined. All adult workshops are scheduled to fit the hectic hours of work and school of young adults and professionals with sessions happening mostly after work and school.

Talented creatives who are more inclined to working on canvass are invited to join the Visual Arts course. Taught by a seasoned PETA artist-teacher focused on drawing and painting, enrollees of the Visual Arts course will get a chance to learn how the lively and energetic character of theater can be emanated through pencil, paper, and canvass.
Another special course that will offered this coming year is Theater Arts for Seniors. Individuals aged 60 and above are promised a refreshing creative experience that will surely inspire and get them moving. The course encourages seniors to relive memorable moments through the lenses of theater and art.

All courses will have a final output where the enrollees are able to showcase all the skills they have acquired in the workshops.

Experience based approach

Another notable aspect of PETA's workshops is its unique integrated theater arts (ITA) approach. This approach assures enrollees of a holistic theater experience as it discusses the varied elements of theater from creative writing, visual arts, creative drama, creative music, to body movement and dance.

Aside from the ITA approach, PETA uses the enrollees' own experience to draw out a production. With the production being based from the enrollees' own stories, students of the workshops feel more comfortable and open to the process of theater education.

Enrollment is ongoing for the PETA Summer Program. Interested enrollees may avail of the early bird discount until February.

Those who would like to enroll may contact PETA at 725 6244, 0905 369 6003, or petatheater@gmail.com to schedule their enrollment. Additional information on the workshops such as the schedule, fees, and course descriptions are available at www.petatheater.com/summer-workshop/.

Press Release: Michelin Innovation: Driving the search for new technologies on Road Safety and Better Mobility in Shell Eco-Marathon Asia 2016

Michelin has joined hands again with Shell for the third staging of the Shell Eco Marathon Asia (SEMA), now on its third and last year in the Philippines from March 3 to 6, 2016.
This year, MICHELIN focuses on Innovation as the driving force that ensures road safety and better mobility on race tracks and ordinary road conditions. In 2014, the key word for MICHELIN at the Shell Eco-Marathon was Michelin Total Performance, underscoring the need for tires to deliver multiple performances, to be safe, energy-efficient and long-lasting.
This year, with Innovation as the key word, participating student teams are looking for new approaches to create safe and energy-efficient vehicles that promote sustainable solutions.
The Shell Eco-Marathon is an international competition that challenges student teams from various parts of the world to create economical, environment-friendly and dependable prototype vehicles. MICHELIN continues to be the Official Global Partner and Tire Supplier of the SEMA in 2016 and will provide technical assistance and support to the participating teams throughout the competition.
“Innovation is Michelin’s key strategy and driving factor for the search of new technologies, leading to ideas, products, or methods that improve road safety and mobility for all motorists, passengers and pedestrians. Michelin’s alliance with Shell furthers this search by seeking out the ideas of students in the Shell Eco-Marathon.", said Damien Hallez-Gozzard, Michelin Group Technical Communication Director.
"Shell and Michelin have partnered anew in the Shell Eco Marathon Asia because we share the same values to put innovation at the heart of developing better mobility. Michelin wants to demonstrate our innovation in sustainable mobility by providing ultimate energy efficient tires to students. We also want to share our technological expertise by giving advice about car suspension," said Michael Nunag, Chief Representative of Michelin Philippines.
The 2015 SEMA drew a record number of 127 participating student teams from 20 countries in Southeast Asia and the Middle East. Teams from Philippine schools also broke records for fuel and energy efficiency. Winners of the different Shell Eco-Marathon this year in Asia, Europe and the Americas may join the first world championship series in London.
The public is invited to visit the Michelin Safety City at the Fanzone on the SEMA grounds on March 4, 5 and 6.
